National HomeCare Month

ImageWhat drives home health care professionals?  Is it their great hearts of compassion and dedication from which they pour their lives daily into the lives of others?  Do they, as George Bernard Shaw wrote, understand that the true joy of life is found in being used up for a purpose that they recognize as a mighty one?  Most likely, it isn’t merely the pay, or the ease of the job; there are jobs to be had that pay more and are less difficult. Whatever the force behind the personal devotion and commitment, November is National Homecare Month during which we salute the people of this honorable profession who give of their lives daily to honor and care for others.

Nearly 12 million Americans receive in-home health care daily. The caregiver provides services to mothers and their new-born, to disabled individuals, and to the elderly—to anyone in need of on-going, in-home assistance. Therapy, wound care, and support in the daily activities of living are but a few of the services provided by therapists, nurses, home health aides, and others extending physician-directed care. The focus is on helping the patient remain in his home world where he prefers to stay, and as an alternative to the higher costs of institutional care. Monitoring of patient progress by clinical management assesses timely change in the patient’s care. Together these dedicated professionals effect change in people’s worlds with open-hearted kindness and care, meeting the medical and daily living assistance requirements of individuals in their homes.

“There is a light in this world, a healing spirit,” Mother Teresa said. “We sometimes lose sight of this when there is suffering, too much pain. Then suddenly the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.”  Caregivers who give of themselves daily to help others in the most basic of needs and desire, the ability to remain at home, are saluted this month of November for their generous labors of love. Truly, these are not ordinary people, but national treasures who have answered a call in extraordinary ways. We honor every one of you involved in extending care, touch, compassion, and comfort to in-home patients. You are genuine heroes and have our genuine respect.  Shakespeare stated it well: “Thanks, thanks, and ever so thanks.”
